How to Enjoy Phuket, Thailand Without Exploiting Animals

Visit the popular attractions

Karon Viewpoint

Take an island tour, soak up the culture, break bread with locals

The makings of fresh fruit juice and good conversation

EAT to your heart's content. The food is REALLY GOOD and REALLY CHEAP

Yes, I ate real food, but I also became obsessed with these Veggie Thai Spring Rolls.
OBSESSED. Oh and they were only $3, at the resort.

Go to the beach and get a massage for the equivalent of $10. Do this DAILY. Several times, even.

And after you get rubbed down, have more tasty cheap dranks

Get to the outer islands, and get your life

Yes. God.

Do I wanna visit Tiger Kingdom or ride the elephants?
See shirt please  (NOPE)

Relax with a good read before getting a good rub down again

Oh, and don't forget the drank

Loungin with a tasty, cheap drank is always a good idea

Did I mention the outer islands? Yeah, there are several and each one offers something different than the next. Will you deny this gorgeousness??

Maya Bay, Ko Phi Phi Leh

If that isn't enough, you can always dance the night away on Patong strip. No, there will be no incriminating photos of that :-)

Seriously, Phuket is paradise. It's affordable, and it's also known as one of the most inhumane places for elephants and tigers, simply because foreigners want to stunt for a photo op. There are other things you can do to fill your time. I only stayed four days, that was enough for me. If you're there longer you can:

  • Go parasailing
  • Go zip lining at Flying Hanuman
  • Take a full day tour around the island that includes Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, and Kata Beach
  • Snorkel, dive, kayak to your heart's content, you can literally do this on any beach
  • Do a waterfalls tour of Kathu, Ton Sai and Bang Pae, and see which one you love best
  • If the Similan Islands are open during the time of year that you go, GET THERE. Spend the night even.
  • RELAX: quality massages are available on the beach, in town, and at your hotel
  • If you have time and patience, do a canoe tour on James Bond Island
  • See a live cabaret show
  • Spend an afternoon taking in the sites at Old Phuket Town
  • Open minded and fairly liberal? Bangla Road at night. Nuff said.
  • Catch a Muay Thai boxing match if you 'bout that life
Welp. I tried. This is only scratching the surface of Phuket. I really see it as a place for relaxation. The beaches are gorgeous, the outer islands are lush and plentiful, and the atmosphere is great.

I have attempted to give you alternatives to taking photos with abused elephants and severely drugged up tigers. If you must intermingle with the animals, there are some cute little monkeys in Karon near the cashew factory and at Maya Bay. They aren't in captivity, and they're savage.

Enjoy.

    1. It is super affordable, I only converted won and things were still cheap.

I forgot to mention that I stayed at CC's Hideway in Karon Beach, it also doubles as a yoga retreat, and was all that.
