Adult Moves; Or, A Very Reckless Decision

Sunday, January 27, 2019

I was in Zanzibar at the airport waiting for check-in to open for the flight back to Nairobi. I was going to spend another day there before my return flight on Ethiopian Air would depart for Doha. Time passes and check-in opens. We learn that there is a fire in the area that the plane would be departing from. The flight was delayed indefinitely.

I didn't wanna be on this puddle jumper again no way!

If you've been to ZNZ airport, you know it's not a place you want to be delayed: No a/c, no real restaurants or duty free, no reliable WiFi, basically nothing to do but people watch in close quarters. Sounds privileged but I don't care. I didn't want to be there indefinitely and I was more than ready to go home.

I let them check my bag, but I walked over to the Qatar Airways ticket office and inquired about outgoing flights; there was one in two hours. I asked if there were open seats; there were. I asked the price: $1,342. One way. Economy class.

I handed them my credit card.

Yes. It was slightly reckless, and at another time, I would have completely dismissed the idea altogether. But I did it, and I have no regrets.

I pushed the purchase to the back of my head and chalked it up as being my whole mood for 2019: if I aint with it I'm OUT.

This could've been airfare for two, maybe three more trips this year; was more than my mortgage in the states; was more than I've ever spent on a plane ticket in any class.
Could've... should've...idgaf. Time is priceless and I wanted to go home.

Takeaways:

  • my patience isn't what it used to be
  • direct flights ONLY going forward
  • Thank God for Qatar Airways
  • Thank God I had it to spare

So, there it is. The most spontaneous thing I've ever done in life (I think?), and no one was hurt. I'd do it again. I was happy as hell when I arrived home, two days earlier than planned.

Time is PRICELESS.

Happy New Year.
